IN THE dust of the Gobi desert in China’s far west Xinjiang region lies the regions largest open-pit coal mine.
It is there that 20 JS Class 2-8-2s haul thousands of tonnes of coal out of the vast pit 24/7.
The sound of these locomotives is spectacular as they slip their drivers struggling to pull maximum loads out of the pit.
The scene is even more spectacular at night because the finely crushed coal used in the locomotives gets blown out the stack before it has a chance to burn properly.

I'm trusting they do not have any dry California-type forests along that route. A locomotive that can light up the night like that could light up a dry forest, too, only too well.

Would that be some big fines in most of the world?
It is a spectacular picture.

I suspect the fireman only did that for the photo. Like in the united states where they make big black smoke for photographs but do not normally operate that way.
