NYC Pilot Program Will Have Medical Professionals Respond to Mental Health Calls Instead of NYPD

In recent years, we’ve seen countless tragedies result from the response by police officers to people suffering a mental health crisis. New York City is set to launch a pilot program next year that will see healthcare professionals responding to these cases instead of the New York Police Department.

NBC New York reports that the program will launch in February 2021 in two high-need communities. The communities are still in the process of being selected, with the program looking through data to find the cities with the highest number of 911 calls related to mental health crises. NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio has called the program a “major innovation,” and cites the ongoing pandemic for its creation.

“One in five New Yorkers struggle with a mental health condition. Now, more than ever, we must do everything we can to reach those people before crisis strikes,” de Blasio said at a press conference Tuesday, NBC reports. “For the first time in our city’s history, health responders will be the default responders for a person in crisis, making sure those struggling with mental illness receive the help they need.”

This is a wild exaggeration. Whoever is coming up with this number is including people with mild depression (most of us at some point), including situational depression (loss of job, death of loved one, etc.) and people with anxiety (also every one of us at some time). This is a mental health condition but not necessarily mental health illness, so to speak. The frequency of serious mental illness is more like 1-2% and this has been known for some decades, including schizophrenia and severe depression/bipolar disorder. Still a lot of people, just an order of magnitude less than DeBlasio is stating. He has no credentials as a health care expert so he's presumably quoting someone who wants more money for mental health care. Doesn't include milder but sometimes disabling illnesses like narcissism, ADHD, and Trump-Fantasizing-About-Election Theft disorder . That's probably a few more percent, but still nowhere near 20%.

Trumps a New York'er and we all believe he's mental.

I believe this entire country has lots of people with mental issues and it plays out more and more in our daily lives. Arguably, we've had this problem for decades and decades, but in the past it didn't seem to be so widespread or maybe people controlled themselves better or maybe without the media reporting everything we just didn't know it. Is this a cumulative effect due to our society and generations are becoming less and less able to cope with life.
