The top photo looks to me like it is of a model. I say that because of the appearance of the track and especially its ballasting, with its razor-sharp edge along the "pavement." Eh? It looks like Lionel track. Plus, of course, the smoke seems simulated, almost cartoon-like.

I agree the smoke is very curious. It appears to have been edited into the image using Photoshop.

However, the smoke appears in everyone's photo, leading me to believe it is some kind of clear plastic image of smoke the museum has hanging from the rafters.

I believe this would work well for the Krell on planet Altair IV, but might need to be a little wider at the bottom.
