I don't get why 'organic' food costs more than that grown with the added expense of pesticides and herbicides and fertilizers.

You will pay more, but you will save in doctor bills in the future.

I know what you mean, GP. I remember beautiful Fall and Wintery snowy afternoons strolling through fields with my father. Even though it was a 16 ga. side by side Ithica and was HEAVY in my young hands, it was my gun my dad gave to me. I wanted nothing more then to prove my worth to my dad. I thank him for taking the time to spend his busy day with just me. He was my hero. And still is. He taught me to respect property, guns, and to only take what you need from the land.

Root of lots of bad insensitive attitudes. Might not seem like the biggest deal I know, but attitudes start there and there's nothing really cool about blowing away innocent creatures with rifles.

Daisy, I would respectfully make a couple of distinctions. Antisocial behavior is marked by the indiscriminate (non-purposeful) killing of animals, but also with a particular correlation in the cruelty to animals, (eg. the skinning or burning of cats alive).

Hunters demonstrate the opposite intent, which is to kill the animal with as much haste and efficiency as is possible.

I remember one hunting trip, a farmer had let us hunt his property outside of Rochester, N.Y. We parked the car and started walking down the tractor lanes. For some crazy reason(only a young kid would know) I started putting broken sticks in the muddy puddles of the tractor ruts as we hunted. Then the blizzard hit! WOW!! The snow just pummeled down and changed the landscape of everything. After walking for quite a while my dad looked at me and said we were seriously lost and became concerned. I looked up at my father and said, no. "See that stick on the trail down there?" We made it to the stick and then I pointed to the next stick about 50 yards away and so on and so on, until we made it to the pavement. I was the hero that snowy afternoon. The hot cocoa at the diner never tasted so good!

Good points made by all.I have never hunted or really became interested in fishing.I eat meat and fish as well as vegetables.We all have our opinions.

I worry with topics like this because of the odd direction that they may take.

I congratulate all on the civility that has occurred in the above discussion and respect all opinions expressed.

I knew I was overstepping my usual self-imposed line in posting that last night. And Pete, murder was the wrong word and I shouldn't have used it, only because it refers to humans killing humans instead of groundhogs. I had a groundhog living on my property in Lewiston for years, and I was very fond of the fellow. He was quite funny in his nervous way, but as much as I tried, he never came near me. I missed him when one season he disappeared. But I wasn't remarking about shooting or not shooting groundhogs, I was remarking on the ra-ra celebration, which I obviously didn't find appealing. However, I fully understand people have different traditions and points of view. I should've kept my mouth shut.

Pete, I know you're a most sweet person, so I'm sorry if I made you feel attacked. But we just see things very differently. I don't feel the killing of that groundhog (or most hunting - or even catch and release fishing) is purposeful. I think it's high time people start taking more real action to change what I consider destructive, out-dated attitudes and traditions against natural habitat and creatures we have the ability and responsibility to control. I'm well aware of all the points you put forth, I just disagree with them. I know about no one else on this forum shares my perspective.

It is odd being part of an on-line community with such dramatically different views as myself, so I usually just joke around instead and ignore any other type of chat. It was just hard to see yet another photo of a young person proudly holding up an innocent (yes, I believe innocent and killed just for the mowing of a yard not for farming if I'm correct, which I believe we have the duty to leave natural habitat instead) animal and everyone giving the kid approbation for it, that's all. I guess I belong on the Cheez-whiz forum instead, I know!

I understand your point.However I worry about those that take the extreme view.I see no reason to kill a song bird[Yes it is illegal but it is done]but what about termites,mosquitoes, fleas ,mice etc.?Some IMHO go too far with their anti-killing positions.

I know this opens me up for the "kill" and I probably can't survive the attack.

Don't worry about extremists R, there aren't really very many of them, and I'm far from extremist. People are always too worried imagining loads of extremists when they're rare in reality. Kill as many mosquitoes as you like, they're not native to the Americas anyway but were brought over on boats. I'm fine with my cat keeping down the mouse population naturally, etc. etc. I even eat a turkey on Thanksgiving (well not the whole thing myself) as long as it's had a free wild life and not been kept in a disgusting inhumane manner all its days. I'm truly thankful for its life that I'm taking, seems only natural to me to be.

I think the idea I was putting forth anyway was if you need to kill something, fine, but the attitude of celebrating the killing rather than respecting the life taken is a bit horrid for me to take. Besides, there are enough big men with big guns (ala Duke!) to more than balance those wishing for a bit more sensitivity regarding wildlife.

Now give me a whiskey and a Cheez-wiz, fast!
