Too many "packers" and no chance to inventory the boxes' contents.

The last move we made [and I do mean last] was about a 100 miles. We did the packing. Company moved in one day.
That was 29 years ago. There are a few things we still are missing.

The last move we did was just about 30 years ago - maybe 10 miles max. We did the packing and loading with a little help from friends and I drove the truck. We can still do the packing and unpacking, and I can still drive a truck, but the loading and unloading is something we'll need a small army for at each end. Not happening.....

Actually, that is the one thing that I have no suspicions of.

When my wife and I moved into our new house as newly-weds, we had much to transfer from our separate domiciles to the marital home. To simplify matters, I did the following, which made the whole process more convenient and secure:
(1) using paint remaining in buckets from changing room colors over the years, I marked - on each side - every box with a note about its contents and likely room usage.
(2) all the boxes were delivered for storage into the new house's 2-car garage, for removal later, as we figured out the new place over time.
(3) family and a small platoon of former students moved everything, including furniture. We even removed a large picture-window pane of glass in my bachelor apartment to allow removal of a heavy and large armoire from the second floor to the ground.

The result? Nothing missing. Nothing broken or scratched. Leisurely unpacking and emplacement.
:D

What are they doing?
I can't see any ties. Digging them out?
What is the upside down thing over the rail?
Looks as if they all came to work with their
jackets on but got warm and hung them on the fence.

Not sure to be honest - ties seem buried and gone...

What is the upside down thing over the rail?

It might be right side up - hold down holding the rail place, maybe?

The closest guy on the left is holding a check gage, a couple of others are holding aligning bars, they're regauging the track. The ties are sunk in the dirt and they are digging down to them to pull spikes, re-gage, plug the tie and respike. By the second hour, the jacket is off and you're thinking about the shirt. That's why I preferred the mechanical department, track gang is like working for a living.

Looks like a typical "native soil" ballasted traction line to me!
Hey, rocks (aka ballast) cost money, which many of those pikes couldn't afford.
They may not have originated the expression of dirt-cheap , but
they sure honored it!
Take care,

And the classic scene - repurposed to be the office for Little Big Boy's service station. One that begs to be modeled!
