Far-out question:
From personal experience, learning, hypothesizing, or personal viewpoint, are there any animals (species) that commit suicide?

I am watching an episode of "Sea Rescue"
and am reminded of seeing news reports , from time to time, over the years, of whales and dolphins "beaching themselves." I have wondered if these were attempts at suicide.

On today's show, "Sea Rescue," they rescued a starving Sea Lion pup that was found on a beach. It was determined later, upon examination, to have had an eye injury. A scientist-volunteer said that such an injury can be very painful for the animal, to the extent that it apparently hadn't eaten for quite a while, thus losing considerable weight. I wondered, "Was this an attempt at suicide - not eating and beaching itself, or was it just a natural reaction to being unwell ." I know when I am ill my appetite drops to near-zero.

I wonder. When whales beach themselves, are they responding to a "genetic memory" of where they started, as stated by Evolutionists, as a species and felt safest - on land as a four-footed wolf-like animal .

Do some animals have the capacity to commit suicide is my question, or is that uniquely

Interesting thought, Robert, which has made me think further. Isn't their action of stinging a group-motivated, group-oriented act, one intended to defend the common good? Do they know their stinger is about to rip the life put of them? I doubt it. And suicide doesn't seem to be an act focused on the common good.

I know what you are suggesting, Roy. And Thank You. Can you give some examples. Some birds do that, right? They fly out of and away from the nest to draw the attention of a predator away from their young in the nest and redirect it to themselves.

Pea aphids can explode when under attack. They do this to kill a lady that would eat all of them. One exploding aphid can save a group from harm.
If your talking suicide from emotional stress. Then dogs come to mind. Some dogs have starved to death after an owner or other family pet dies.(no Rufus someone is still alive to feed the dog) geese have problems when a mate dies. A quick google search says "Flipper committed suicide" what about lemmings?
