Bob, what do have in R/C planes? My dad built his first R/C set back in 1947. Not sure if that was the exact year but it's close. All handmade of course. I still have it.

Hmm, let's see, off the top of the head.
Great Planes PT-40 trainer. Been through several of 'em, as I seem to fly through Cumulo-Apple-Trees
Scratchbuilt A-10 warthog. Gots a big 'ol .60 hanging off the nose, sounds like the Gun is shooting all the time.
Several gliders. I like the idea of soaring, no flight time restrictions because of limited fuel capicity.
A .15 powered Corsair, foam wings, (An Ace Kit) for punching bent wing holes in the sky above the front yard.
My radios are mostly Futabas, one Airtronoics (the oddball) and a HiTech 3 channel that flies the gliders.
Oh, yeah, one other glider, an Estes rocket boost glider!
Uses blackpowder "E" engines that have an end plug so they don't eject at the top of the trajectory.
Havn't had the gonads to try it under rocket power yet

Yes, it's nearly flyin' season again!!!!

FLIGHT

My father was drunk again, but then,
It was only New Year's Eve he was sober.
--a night for the amateurs he said.
I guess the rest of the year
Was for tall gaunt Irishmen.

My father was drunk again, and the
Two of us drove to the local airport,
More a grass strip, a rusty Quonset hut
With an orange windsock dangling.
We were on one of our rare outings together;
We are here to fly the Big Yellow Job,
An enormous model airplane my dad
had built in his youth.
It carried a radio receiver,
Was controlled by a transmitter box
His hand on a black-knobbed stick.
He fired up the model engine
Blood rising on his cut knuckles
His hand caught in the propeller
His hands clumsy, his eyes misty
With drunken nostalgia.
We smell the fuel burning rich,
The fresh-mown landing strip,
The insect-like scream of
the small engine piercing
The soft drape of humid summer
The low slant of the evening sun.
The Big Yellow Job lifts
Wobbles above a small pine hedge
Like an Albatross, like new hope.
We watch and my father flies,
High above our heads it climbs
Irresistible in the sunlight,
But we are left below in shadow,
As drunkenly my father confuses
the commands for the stick
And the plane plummets,
Like a shot-gunned duck
Like your hero falling
But faster, crying out.

My dad hands me the controls,
"You take her now, Boo."
And he never let me give them back.

My Dad flew control line aircraft, he bulit a Cessna 152 when he was in the Air Force, we would fly it on special occasions.

Never been so dizzy in my life!

I couln't get used to screwing myself in the ground, so it was R/C for me.

Hey Tramp, what you really need is a 1940 Buzzard Bombshell for that Super Cyclone of yours.



Be sure to use a DT (dethermalizer tube) with a short wick and Trexler pneumatic wheels to bring her down soft somewhere within your county.



BTW, did anyone else lust after Jetex motors in the hobby shop but was not able to afford one?

WTH. If you haven't swung a prop on one of these

by hand and feared the bone crunching wallop of not removing your fingers fast enough, you just have not experienced model airplane engines.

Mine was manufactured in 1940 and after 67 years still packs a wallop. I have ruined its collector value by resurfacing the cylinder walls and re-machining a piston for it. It was probably financially out of reach for people like my dad when he was young, but cheaply manufactured out of pot metal and no piston ring, with wear, losing compression. Mine has the curious habit of episodically backfiring, belching smoke, and then running "backwards" (clockwise, facing the engine from the front). The knob on the stem in front advances and retards spark; critical for starting the damn thing.

I am trying to remember the name for the little flip up thing on the gas tank that you used to open and put "gas" in. Gitz Cap?

My Dad taught me the value of the Chicken Stick, but, he was all Man, flipping the prop on the Cyclone .35 by hand.
And, yes, he rapped his fingers!

The first time I ever flipped a prop by hand was on a K&B sportster .65, I was using a pair of welding gloves, and still smarted from that blasted prop! (my feild box battery was dead, and I just HAD to get that engine running. Go Fever. )

I use a Sullivan electric starter, and a glo-plug driver from my power panel. (Yup, I'm very chicken)

As far as collector value goes, well, there's always trains to finaince your retirement (lol)

The Jetex engines are still available, there was an article on 'em in Model Airplane News a few years ago. And yes, I have lusted over them!

J N! I saw the coolest thing down in the Ringling Museum in Sarasota - the circus outfits from the whole century or so, and the best of all - and they were all REALLY killer - was the guy's they shot out of the cannon! Plus they had the cannon!
