I don't remember Thresher or Scorpion. I do remember the Glomar Explorer - not that anyone knew what it was really being used for, at the time.

Thresher was a wake up call for the Navy. The boat pushed the limits of technology and sufficient safe guards and procedures were not implemented in her construction. This reminds me of what happened with NASA and Apollo one. We got complacent with our technology and a lot of good people died. The boat was turned into confetti when she imploded and that contributed to the problems in finding the wreck. The site doesn't look like a ship wreck, very little is identifiable as parts of a submarine.

Scorpion is largely intact, the sail was torn off and the entire front of the boat was flooded (aka it sank and did nor implode). She broke in half just forward of the reactor compartment. The engineering space telescoped in on itself. The numerous explanations on why she sank include a number of conspiracy theories that don't match up with the actual wreck (e.g. Russian torpedo, US torpedo failure, etc......). The vessel was probably lost because of deferred maintenance. The maintenance funds were diverted to cover the costs of the modifications to the spy subs used to tap soviet submarine cables.

You can see the photo's of both wreck sites from Bob Ballard's survey of the wrecks which was financed by the Navy and partially under cover of searching for the Titanic. The later was actually what Ballard wanted to do but the Navy wanted to use his equipment to survey the wrecks and assure they weren't leaking radioactive material from the reactors and in Scorpions case her weapons (nuclear torpedo's).

BTW, the original vessel "Scorpion" was used to create the first US ballistic missile submarine George Washington. They were well on the way to completing that "Scorpion" when she was selected to become the George Washington. They cut the sub in half just forward of the reactor compartment and inserted the missile compartment. Another hull was selected to become the Skipjack class submarine Scorpion.
