The next day, Garcetti called a press conference to announce that the city would be reallocating $250 million from its budget— including as much as $150 million from the LAPD — to “invest in jobs, in health, in education and in healing” in the “black community here in Los Angeles.”

“We have to do something different,” Garcetti said. “We hear what people are saying.”

Black Lives Matter-L.A. was quick to take credit. “The $150 million cut to LAPD funding & reallocation of $250m to communities of color comes as a result of PROTEST and ORGANIZING,” the group tweeted alongside a video the June 2 demonstration. “This step forward was won by the people. … And we’re not done.”

There were no go zones when I lived in the Los Angeles area for 30 years. Going to Hawthorne High School we stayed out of East LA and the Compton area. Very seldom did we see any low riders in our areas and we stayed out of theirs. They called us HODADS. a nonsurfer who frequents surfing beaches and pretends to be a surfer.

Non of the Beach Boys who I went to school with were surfers. But they did write a lot of surfing songs.

This will be an interesting experiment for LA to see if they can get by without a police force and go to community policing.

The cartels and drug dealer will have a free run along with all the MS-13 gangs.

With the loss of tax revenue. Cuts will come from every city agency . police,education,streets,parks, and others

That was going to happen regardless - nothing like a pandemic and 13-15% unemployment to cut into tax revenue.

That's the next step this is just the beginning in their quest to eliminate 'systemic racism'

Could bring about systemic police early retirements, police just quitting, or police just refusing to stop minorities from committing crime. Yea..let's give that a try,,,, a country without police protection and see how that goes for a while. No more traffic tickets, no more police administered narcan, no more investigation of accidents, elder checks , finding lost children, domestic dispute resolution, murder investigation or a plethora of other benefits of a police force.

We can wall it off like "Escape from LA" that's what this BS would turn into.

Kind of funny how people think the sky is falling. Most towns should be happy to see a budget cut. 150 million is peanuts in their budget. These cuts could come from a slew of things. How about no new cars or painting of offices. With people working at home. You may see LAPD's non officer staff work from home. Saving on building rent. With less flights out of LAX you may see less officers doing parking control there. LAPD's annual budget 1.8 billion. Not even a 10 percent cut. People should be upset they can't trim more.

Actually, I think you may be correct. I've yet to know of any sort of Gov't agency at any level that could not absorb a 10-15% cut w/o making a single change in real operations. Everyone builds in a 10-20% padding. When there's a cut, there's lots of P&M'ing and then they just do the job they were doing before the fat got cut from the budget.

Did I imagine this episode? Was it part of incompetent reporting by news agencies with dubious agendas ? Well, I watched the mouths move as they spoke and heard their messages. So I must be wrong.

I was asking about LA, not Minneapolis. You might actually read the line I was responding to that you included in your post. Not reading and understanding context is unlike you.

Defund the police was also ongoing in DC.

Wouldn't you like to have a nice place to live that cost $600.000 dollars paid for by the TAXPAYERS.

L.A.’s $1.2 Billion Bond Measure to Combat Homelessness Not Keeping Pace With Growing Need for Housing: Audit

Measure HHH, which passed with more than 77% of the vote in 2016, was meant to build units that would cost about $350,000 to $414,000 each. But the audit has found 1,000 of the units cost $600,000 or more.

The median cost of each unit is $531,000, and now only 7,640 units are set to be funded, according to the audit. All of the funds from the measure have already been allocated to 114 projects, the audit stated.


Many of the units funded by the measure cost more than the median price of a condo in the city, or a single-family home in the county, Galperin said in a news release. Costs are still expected to rise as the projects are expected to take three to six years each to complete.

“The length of time needed to complete these projects does not meet the level of urgency needed to match the magnitude of our homelessness crisis,” the report stated.

What is a unit? A single family home? or a multi family complex. I have no answers for our country's homeless problem. Is it a choice,disease, or bad decision? They all lead to living on the streets. I know people get tired of throwing good money after bad.

I was asking about LA, not Minneapolis…...

I understood that. I was just mentioning Minneapolis as a place I had become aware, just today , where it had actually been presented by the crowd and addressed by the mayor .

Your informing me, here, of DC being another city involved in that controversy is the first I have heard of that. I'll watch for more.
