There seem to be more commercials on TV these days, with the exception of political ones, selling medicine than most other stuff.
My question is where do they get thse names for them? The generic names don't seem to have in relation to other names in use.
Right now I can't think of any of those names. When I see some I will try to post them.

Here's two. Cosentyx and Rinvoq. Where do these names come from? Do they have any actual connection to the medicine?

I have noticed the same thing, at least to the quantity of those ads. They seemed to be aimed at us and we can not buy them anyway, not without a prescription. I really do not think that a doctor is going to pay much attention to a patient saying: "I saw this tv ad for (drug) and .........".

Actually they do. The pharma companies are trying to push potential patients to push their physicians to prescribe the latest greatest "treatments". I once asked a doctor about this. They get samples/pressure from drug company sales people to push a product but most of the pressure is from their patients who see the print/radio/TV ads that only extol the alleged benefits of the new product. They are now required to include disclaimers regarding potential side effects/issues. I suspect these are rarely "heard" or at least rarely paid attention to. If I hear them say that the new stuff is linked to symptoms that could lead to death, can cause complications that lead to death or can just plain cause death I would certainly think two, three, four, or more times before asking to take the stuff. Especially if whatever is wrong with me is not life threatening!

Drugs have at least 3 names; trade name (what you see on the label and in commercials, e.g. Rinvoq, a JAK1 inhibitor) which comes from a marketing department with some FDA approval, registered FDA drug name, e.g. Upadacitinib which actually translates to other information usually regarding class of drug and mechanism and maybe even origin, and then there's an actual chemical name that might be rather long and near incomprehensible and in this case that's: (3S,4R)-3-Ethyl-4-(3H-imidazo[1,2- a]pyrrolo[2,3-e]pyrazin-8-yl)-N-(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)pyrrolidine-1-carboxamide hydrate (2:1).

ABT-494 is the name that the company uses from its development records - AbbVie

TV, radio, and print media sells a lot of drugs to patients that ask for them from their doc's.....whether they need them or not or even have the disease at all.
