Seriously....if somebody with my low investigative skillsets sees the differences, all I can do is try to point them out.

For all we know, B&O took a P-7 numbered 5300, swapped the boiler, stuck a set of PRR BoxPox drivers under it, swapped lead wheels and trailing truck, sunk the middle of the boiler and moved the bell...dropped the ladders back...changed the smokebox door...numbered it as a Mountain...and somebody took a picture and made a model before B&O said..."Nah!" and swapped it all back.

Absolutely. Take the three-rail approach.

In the case of SC, you have a NYC Hudson, an SP Mountain and P-13, a PRR K4, and a Santa Fe Mike....and ONE NYC Caboose.

So you letter the cabeese for one of each, just believe and ignore, right?

Sorry to get you all in a whirl about the different class Pacific ...

Coming from the tinplate world ..heck if they get the number of wheels correct it is good to go ...

When I first saw the engine ..connecting B&O and a Pacific ...Ken Henry jumped to mind ....... upon being pointed out that my engine has it's bumps and lumps in the wrong places ....I hit the binders ..Romney had binders of woman ..I have binders of old O scale info ( pathetic I know) ...so the flip through process to identify the Pacific..... never would I have guessed that I would have run across an Acme steamer ...Acme was early and small time ...so I'm thrilled it's an Acme ... ( I'm easily amused ) .... one day I'll post about a real Henry .... it's all just timing ....

So you have an issue with a SC PRR K4 17/64ths pulling a NYC 1/4" caboose ? .... SC foretold of the Conrail merger .....

who runs with a caboose anyway ..... ? ... nothing more nostalgic that a flashing FRED on the back of all door stop trains .

Lionel forced it's 700E customers to pull a red sausage for 2 1/2 years till they brought out a decent car for it to be seen on the same track with

Re: the Scale Craft caboose.
It was, in my opinion, so bad that I choose to not own one.
But its prototype ranks #3 in my favorite caboose list, after the SP cupola types and the PRR N6b. I run mine behind anything I please. I have the 717, the Williams brass repro, and a wood model - maybe Walthers.

That really says it all. I know both camps, involved in both, understand the dichotomy and the resulting silliness and adjust accordingly.

"Reality is not what the people want". That is really bad and narrow of vision. Change that to "Reality is not what some people want" and at least you have left room for discussion.

One of the great chasms is that between the 0 scaler who at least tries....using references...to model closely the given prototype and the TCA driven 3-railer who thinks "if ...... the number of wheels correct it is good to go".

Some folks even care about which way ice hatches point on ATSF refrigerator cars.

SC Dave and Carey both make some interesting distinctions. I lean towards Dave's at least trying to get it right with what you have.
I've done enough salvage now to (usually) know when to cut bait, if not even start, on the out-of-scale, irredeemable POS, though some of my colleagues will tell you behind my back that is simply not true largely based on my disinterest in digital control, most new in box PRC crap, and affinity for old composite, cast and extruded kits.

BTW, and opinion only, the chopper may be coming for that reasonably priced PRC crap too, at least with regard to new retail price if not aftermarket.

One personal case in point is the possibly Wentzco FT A&B units I obtained...25 or 30 years ago.

They were so badly done for 2-rail, there was no reasonable way to fix them..and since Lorel Joiner had sent me A&S FT A&B shells, I didn't care.

So, milled the bottoms out, plopped them on 2343 Lionel chassis, and it works...regardless of what Burner thinks.

This entire discussion now focuses on exactly what I had said earlier about 3-rail not caring, and Burner put up a photo of a scratchbuilt 2-rail car to prove...something...

If you look at both ends of the spectrum, as in the die hard prototype modeler, and the TCS tinplate collectors, they are similar in that the prototype people want to be as close to the real thing as possible and the collectors want their stuff to be dead on, as out of the box original (and a perfect box). Then there is everything in between. A H*ll of a mess!
