Nothing special, All Nation chain drive. I prefer the AN skewed gear drives. AN had problems with the chain sprockets splitting. New sprockets are available but the gear drives never fail.

Joe - Thanks for your comment. A good friend very much thinks the chain drive is better and he is pretty knowledgeable about this stuff, but not as knowledgeable as you. And I'm trailing fairly far behind both of you. Steve

The chain drive is probably quieter than the gear drive but I do not mind the sound of the meshing gears They are not that loud and they do not fail. Keep them greased and they will outlast you. I have a good number of All Nation diesels with the geared drives and the BSME club layout in Baltimore has a set of F-3 units with the old straight gear drives from the late 1940s and they are still going strong. AN developed a simple and effective diesel drive.

I have no chain drives in service. I may have some chain drive trucks in a box.
I like skewed gears, but straight cut (even earlier) with speedometer cable instead of Toyotata hose will absolutely settle loose ballast into place. Most of mine are straight cut gears.

The seller of this mechanism makes a note in his listing that none of the sprockets are split so he is aware of the potential problem.

I have repaired and replaced split sprockets on Weaver drives but why bother when the AN geared drives are available and never have failed me. I don't need more to do!
