Early 30's Hudson built by ?

Postby Carey Williams » Tue May 02, 2017 4:13 pm

Hello keepers of the doors that are stopped .

At York I took delivery of a piece won at a New England auction .... listed as a ScaleCraft Hudson . Did ScaleCraft change their molds during the run of the Hudson ? ...or who made this engine ? I've attached several photos of the mystery Hudson aside the "standard" ScaleCraft Hudson ....much more cast detail in the mystery Hudson .... except the tender ..sans rivets ... but the ( I assume Scalecraft tender) with the SC engine has rivets . The mystery engine out weighs the SC engine by several pounds .... much better proportioned headlight than the 55 gallon drum SC used . Both have feed water heaters ...which I can not find among the other early little guys ...Acme, Birch , Howard , Icken etc ....
Any ideas who made this lovely Hudson ?
Thank you
Cheers Carey

ScaleCraft is one for sure. I think we did this a while back...guess the number of 0 Hudsons with imbedded feedwater heaters, and not a lot came to fore.

Looking closely, I still think the one in question probably started as a SC. Whack and add parts, move parts....just too much "close". Cylinders, boiler, cab, cab windows, drivers, trailing truck....who knows on the tender. Might even be SC somebody filed the rivets off and made a "welded" tender. There were two versions of SC Hudsons, changed in chassis, and a big clue was reversing switch. Later ones had a rotating steam dome.

Hello all

It appears both of these are Scalecraft ..the one with the two hatch sand dome is first year 1934 .....

By January 1935 Scalecraft has changed the boiler to a one piece casting with the more commonly seen one hatch sand dome .

Just more useless minutia to impress your dinner date with .
Cheers Carey

PS the 1934 engine will be running live at Indy ..back and forth and back and forth
