Was it John Armstrong that devised a system he referred to as "Smiles" for measuring his model railroad?
I don't remember the system but it made sense.

I think it was called "squares". Panhandle 1.0 was designed using that system (with a lot of compromises).

Two different things.
The squares were for laying out trackwork.
The Smiles were for measuring mileage that was not scale but could be used for operation purposes (I think).

Your layout building expertise is quite impressive. How many layouts have you had ? taken them down and rebuilt at another new home. I think it would be interesting if you put together a photo show of all the layouts you have had and when you had them.

This one of Christopher's layouts was my favorite.

That was the first layout I built after I got back into the hobby. My wife thought I was nuts! (Still does!)
