I just read the article in Classic Trains today.Darn good photography for a teenager,IMHO.

There is proof here of modern[1950s] and older rolling stock of varying sizes mixed together on the same train.

Also note the real thing that Lionel copied in the 700 series of scale cars to go with the 700 Hudson.I had never seen the actual caboose with the cupola near the end of the car before.

Ramming beers on the porch of a dump in Santa Monica I lived in in 1977 with grad school friends and a few students. A year before, as I was plotting my leaving the Air Force and applying to go back to school on the GI bill, (former) love of my life fessed up and let me know she had been married to someone else. For a while. While I was away. A year later I was in school but still getting over it. Things turned out a whole lot better in the end, but I didn't know it at the time. Watching that harvest moon and listening to Sanford Townsend, I was "Lord, I was stoned, should have seen it coming a long time ago. When I realized, the reality gave me a roll."

Got the article from my brother-in-law. #90 is 84 years old. Was built by the Baldwin Locomotive works in Philly. She is a decapod a 2-10-0 in June 1924 and built for hauling sugar beets in Colorado and only used in the fall of the year. The Great Western Railway had 4 of them and #90 ran longer than any of them. Sold to the Strasburg RR in 1967 for $23,000. It was well taken care of by the Great Western and was in service just nine days after coming to Strasburg. Its the biggest and most used engine at Strasburg and has probably been run 400,000 miles. It weights 180 tons fully loaded and ready to go. It uses 800 pounds of coal for the 9 mile round trip at Strasburg. Its a nice article and I pretty much covered her here. Hope it wasn't too boaring for yous.

I would have happily settled for "Smoke of a Distant Fire". Flames crawling up both sides of Via de la Valle as we caravaned our cars stuffed with stuff to the evacuation center at the fairgrounds evacuation center was up close and personal. When I was growing up in LA, and later returned to finish school, there would be fires in Topanga and Malibu that we could see, but, it was always something at a distance.

As a child, I remember pictures of Joe E. Brown in the LA Times in front of the skeleton of his Brentwood home in 1961. At the time, I was thinking of his line in "Some Like It Hot" when Daphne (Jack Lemmon) admits to Osgood Fielding (Joe E. Brown) that she is a man: "Well, nobody's perfect". Never dreamed it would be that close in my life.

Since I saw you and Mary in LA, I've had a lot of traveling around the world. It's amazing that people from Uganda to Haifa to Toyko still ask about the fires. I am usually embarrassed to admit that after the evacuation center we spent most of our time at L'Auberge at a considerable discount (I give them points for not gouging anybody and cutting their rates).
