When I think of the horrors of Christmas shopping and all that it entails and the warpage that it has become, I am periodically reminded of this little ditty that I was listening to inthe car very early this morning:

I just walked outside under a near full moon (that early New England autumn darkness) to cut some late herbs for my homemade chicken leek soup. Instead of a flashlight, I took a railroad lantern given to me by a certain hobo. Canadian National lantern. Kind of made that outing special. Thanks again, Pete.

Thank you, Petey. I usually set aside a few hours on Veterans Day to visit Rosecrans and did today. Every time I do this, I am reminded of

Tramp, herbs from the garden (especially collected at night) are a special treat. We don't cultivate anything special, there's rosemary, Persian mint and basil, Parsley, and Mexican sage all over the place. You can tell what's ripe just by the smell of it as you move through the fields. I often take an early morning walk or SS mountain bike ride through the "weeds" in the rear of our property before work, and the odors and aromas tell you what is ready to go. Slow food. Cooking in the seasons.

My favorite is when the rosemary has tender buds. I separate them from the woody branches, chop, and crush with garlic for a paste that is applied to a butterflied leg of lamb. Two hours in the Smoker with the smallest amount of oak makes for a feast.
