I'm a college professor teaching advanced painting. Yesterday the school's secretary asked me what degrees I held so that she could verify them. I told her none. She looked a bit stunned. I didn't mention that I lacked even a high school diploma. Hey, even hobos gotta eat.

Hmmm.....

A freind of mine for grad school never did get his PhD and took an MA degree instead. Turned out all along he was a fabulous teacher both in lecture and laboratory and has been gainfully employed by that very talent.

Periodically, the university he is currently at reviews the department and finds that much to their shock & horror that a non-PhD is teaching!!! And, so they promptly move to terminate him. The department has to fight this off not only because it's just flat out stupid and that because he's the best teacher in the department, but also then because of him they don't have to teach.....

The correlation between degrees and number of degrees, and the ability and quality of teaching is round about......nil.

Just wondering, Jon said you were scouting around to see if you could find a 4-4-0 started set lionel engine that was not too expensive. Just wondering if you had any success or are you still not venturing out since your operation? I haven't been to any train shows except for the one at Oaks which was a bust.

Well, I do happen to have 3 degrees and exist in that bizarre & surreal world of the full time research publish and/or perish life. I've had a number of post-grad's and now my 1st successful PhD. student and I'm considering taking on another.

Can I teach in a classroom? Probably, adequately, and maybe better or maybe not.... Can I teach my "kids" how to do research, publish, write grants, get a job - no doubt about it ->Yes!

Funny how at universities that a PhD is an automatic license to teach; just having a BA/BS & being admitted to grad school is a license to teach....been that way next to forever, too.

I'm not exactly sure how many PhD's my drill instructor in boot camp had under his hat... But we learned and learned quickly!

Smacked a phukin' deer with a customers Wrangler this morning, within spittin' distance of the dealership. 42 years without an accident, including 1 1/4 million miles of tractor-trailer, and now 2 in five weeks.

I consider all you guys my friends, so please don't stand beside me in a thunder storm! Lightning shows no discrimination.

From now on, I might have to do my road-testing on the hoist.
