Real nice day. I think I will head over to Strasburg and git some pictures. Conrail Days are at the Railroad museum today. I heard NS have a EMD SD-80 Mac there. Have to check it out.

Re: Hobo Jungle
Well, it was a good day until the closing minutes and then it turned into one of those truly lovely sessions thanks to another special interaction with people that you think you've known and worked with and trusted and relied on and taught them just about all that they know..........

Recipe For Prison Pruno
A poem by Jarvis Masters
Take ten peeled oranges,
Jarvis Masters, it is the judgment and sentence of this court,
one 8 oz. bowl of fruit cocktail,
that the charged information was true,
squeeze the fruit into a small plastic bag,
and the jury having previously, on said date,
and put the juice along with the mash inside,
found that the penalty shall be death,
add 16 oz. of water and seal the bag tightly.
and this Court having, on August 20, 1991,
Place the bag into your sink,
denied your motion for a new trial,
and heat it with hot running water for 15 minutes.
it is the order of this Court that you suffer death,
wrap towels around the bag to keep it warm for fermentation.
said penalty to be inflicted within the walls of San Quentin,
Stash the bag in your cell undisturbed for 48 hours.
at which place you shall be put to death,
When the time has elapsed,
in the manner prescribed by law,
add 40 to 60 cubes of white sugar,
the date later to be fixed by the Court in warrant of execution.
six teaspoons of ketchup,
You are remanded to the custody of the warden of San Quentin,
then heat again for 30 minutes,
to be held by him pending final
secure the bag as done before,
determination of your appeal.
then stash the bag undisturbed again for 72 hours.
It is so ordered.
Reheat daily for 15 minutes.
In witness whereof,
After 72 hours,
I have hereon set my hand as Judge of this Superior Court,
with a spoon, skim off the mash,
and I have caused the seal of this Court to be affixed thereto.
pour the remaining portion into two 18 oz. cups.
May God have mercy on your soul.

Great last line!
Could be referring to drinking the homemade hootch, more than the death sentence!

Re: Hobo Jungle
Hey Dirt, Now, that's an interesting site. I had no idea such a place existed, which added a perspective to life, for me. (Just when we think we know plenty and have experienced plenty in life...we learn more. )
When I read some of its postings, I could hear the same sort of reverence, for times gone by and for people who affected us in our youth, as we often hear on model RR forums. (And even tractor threads!
) Interesting, indeed.

Re: Hobo Jungle
My first permanent company truck was a '79 Fmodel Mack cabover: 300plus engine, Mack TRDL1070 transmission, genuine Mack differentials, NO air conditioning or power steering. Ya had to stand up in the corner and use a pick handle to turn the wheel.
I put 638,000 miles on that truck, from Florida to the upper ends of Ontario, from Oregon to Nova Scotia, and from Texas to Manitoba, and I'm here to tell ya' that it was the ....... worst ridin', most miseralble, drivin' goddamn truck there ever was.
Speed Limit: Cars 70
Trucks: 55
Macks: move to the shoulder and git along as best ya can.
Was really glad in '84 to get a new Volvo/White cabover: 350 Cat, Fuller 10spd, and Rockwell 370 rears, with Power Steering and Air Conditioning.

Re: Hobo Jungle
Mitch, LMAO!!
"pick handle" indeed!
I never drove a big rig, but I found that thread seriously amusing anyway.
Hey lads, hobo birthday tomorrow! I don't want to name names, but if you want some 'history' that's getting WAY up there in years,
, 'follow this trainman'!

Dirt's right. LOL indeed, Mitch! That was some of the best writing (I could see it all and am still chuckling) and eye-opening description I have read in a long time. Remember when we first said hello, here, you asked if you were going to have to watch your English? Well, man-o-man, are you sure you are not an author? You should be. You are. Real and pithy. Throw into the mix your sense of humor (If a man is alone in a forest...) and it all makes for one compelling read. That means I never miss a post by you. Couldn't. Wouldn't. Too much fun.

We've been setting up for 5 days for 2 minutes of a horse race and now I am on hour 14 of the day. I need a beer.
