Yes, Dirt, wild horses couldn't keep me away, esp. if Hev would be able to spend more time jaw-boning w/ us than fiddlin' w/ mechanical wonders. You might like to know, also, that I had packed scotch , bourbon, and a few other pleasures in the back of the car, to share a drink, or several, w/ you guys (not knowing whether you imbibed or not - I was prepared,) but I ended up parking so far away, due I suppose to the hour of my arrival, that it turned out to be impractical to suggest we go to the car. Perhaps, you can arrange/facilitate a different location for me to park next time?

And as far as the qualities of Hev's mind are concerned, "wicked" and "twisted" recommend him well to me. Remember, my yute was spent enjoying the late 60's, and all the 70's and 80's. I only missed out on Woodstock because I had bought a new motorcycle and wasn't going to get off it for that whole notorious weekend of mud sliding, free "expression," joint "toking" , and ..oh yea, listening to music, too. He'd have to go some for me to find it unusual, let alone wicked. 8)

I got it, Dirt; my reply to AG wasn't timed well. I should have sent it last night when I first intended to. I did it now along w/ response to you, above, neglecting the chronology of it all - an oversight.

Estivation or aestivation (from Latin aestas, summer), also known as "summer sleep", is a state of animal dormancy somewhat similar to hibernation. It takes place during times of heat and dryness, the hot dry season, which is often but not inevitably the summer months.

Thank you, sir. I am now certain, just as I have suspected all along, for quite some time, now, that my wife and I need to get rid of our college-days dictionaries and update our reference materials, just a tad. We couldn't find it at all, but then again, the copyrights are from...oh....lets' just say.... long ago.
P.S. We found it,now, using your "esti..." spelling.Thanx.

Someday there might be a convention of MTJ forum users.

If that ever happens I hope that I am able to be present,if not to participate,at least to listen and watch.

It would be an un-forgettable hoot.Woodstock was mentioned above. This would be a model train Woodstock equivalent.

I have never met any of you but I can imagine it.There would have to be a Gomers amongst other things.

Just dreaming.

Note know this is a McCormick Deering corn cutter. One row at a time. This has a 10 or 20 hp Wisconson engine on it to run the gearing that runs the cutter. It also runs the conyver that takes the corn stalks over to the wagon.....................

Hev,

You are getting some fabulous photos of rural Amish life. Love those mules. Do three mules = two draft horses?

Thank you for sharing.

Here in Tucson it is a perfectly hot day to stay inside, research a little history and try to find the truth in such matters as the Theory of Relativity. This research was sparked by something Rufus said.

Rufus T. Firefly wrote:I don't know, it's in the 1st volume of my 1936 Websters.....

People thought they were smarter back then. They preferred Latin words to lazy phonetic spellings. I don't think that they were smarter. For example, that dummy Alfred Einstein (the relativity guy.)

Einstein was a patent clerk working at the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property. Patent clerks review patent applications to determine whether the claimed invention should be granted a patent. The work of a patent clerk is searching patents and scientific literature databases for prior art, and examining patent applications substantively by examining whether the claimed invention meets the patentability requirements such as novelty, "inventive step" or "non-obviousness", "industrial application" (or "utility") and sufficiency of disclosure. So, he was in a perfect position to research the works of Galileo, Newton, Ampère', Lorentz, Ohm, Gauss, Heaviside, Planck, Grossman, Maxwell, Tait and others and put together a novel he named The Special Theory of Relativity (1905.)

It was not until eleven years later that he published his sequel to the Special Theory, The General Theory of Relativity (1916.) What took so long? Einstein was poor in math despite graduating ETH, Zurich in 1900 as a teacher of mathematics and physics. He could not figure out the math required for a General Theory (E = M C squared.) He finally went to his mathematician friend Marcel Grossmann for help and was then able to publish his General Theory of Relativity.

What a dummy. His novels based on the work of others remind me of those lip sync singers who mouth the words of other singers.

Einstein could not even correctly figure out how a toy such as the Crookes Radiometer works. I was taught that it worked by the pressure of light waves. Just one of many lies I was taught in school. Einstein thought the vanes turned due to Brownian motion, i.e. gas molecules touching the black side of the vanes gain energy and repel with such force as to kick the vane into motion. Wrong dummy. It works by an effect discovered by a true genius, Osborne Reynolds...thermal transpiration.

Just my humble opinion, but if I was one of those mules having to pull that idiot around on that turn of the century schlock sled, I'd kick that dude square in the balls the first chance I got.

From what I know about mules (which could be written along one side of a blade of hay....blade? :) ) I think they do try to give folks a kick once in a while, though I doubt they have the family-jewels as a deliberate target. I think they like heads and asses. )
But then, you knew all that, of course. In fact, I don't even know a mule from a donkey from an ***. And I have no idea why I'm even yapping here, on this topic. However, I have a feeling Mr. Wizard - Wayne - will be straightening me out shortly.

When I was young our family had an angel that went on top of the Christmas tree. It was an angel in a mirrored disc, kinda like about a third of something the size of a volley ball. The mirrors were made of many prisms, and atop the angels head was a single Christmas size lightbulb, but perfectly clear. Atop that was a pin, and on that sat a propeller. As the bulb heated, the propeller would turn, all reflecting in the mirrored prisms, and casting images all about the room. I am assuming that was working the same as what Wayne described?

I heard it was a dry county out there, no place to wet a whistle. I'll be there next year for sure. I'll have 10 days vacation next fall, and that'll let me do Lancaster with the wife, and still make Canada for the fishin' trip, Good Lord willin'. I'll bring the LaBatts.
