I don't know if any of you rail warriors are still awake, but the Geminid meteor shower is peaking tonight.

I was just out for maybe 15 minutes after getting home from work, and saw 31, including maybe 4 or 5 bright ones. Not too shabby. It's a balmy 34 degrees, better than the 12 degrees we had two days ago. And, it doesn't get any prettier: Cassiopeia/Perseus and the double-cluster on the northwest side, Aries/Taurus/Orion and the Pleiades in a line to the south, Leo rising to the east with Mars under his chin, the Crab and it's little jewel of the Beehive cluster above him, and Gemini straight up, right where you want a radiant to be, and the moon nowhere to be found.
But it won't last long here, a fog's creeping in. Gotta get my fat *ss in bed anyway. It's 0130, reveille @ 0600.

I’ll be the first to admit it- “useless” would serve me well as an appropriate middle name.

Train-watching, tractor-watching, bird-watching, sky-watching, what’s the difference? Useless all, since none of them put food on the table, but they all give me satisfaction.

Especially the last. Let it never be said that I didn’t enjoy contemplating a heavenly body.
