As evident to me in the faces of the passengers in that car, Rufus, as well as in my imagination, that whole period must have been an exciting time, with the change-over from horses to automobiles blending throughout American society. Products like buggy whips were facing a shrinking market; gas stations were finding their way; paved roads were replacing dirt roads, etc.

A period of transition....

Some interesting characters in the photo as well and much detail to be appreciated.

The CVRR Pioneer and the combine; the engine is in Baltimore and the combine is in Strasburg.

It seems that they are very slowly getting closer to being reunited.........

What is that just behind the cow-catcher? Sorta looks like a broom or mop hanging there.

I had every hope that SMR would import this engine (maybe the combine, too!) but I'm not sure how long I'm willing to wait vs. just building one from scratch.

I'd prefer 2 actually as the 2nd one that the CVRR, Jenny Lind, had was rebuilt into an inspection engine.

Keep the track clear and clean - 1851 engine that ran up until the turn of century and then used on display until now at the B&O museum in Baltimore

Every weekend Hedviga Hogwort would ride the train to visit her father in the veteran's hospital. Upon exiting at her destination. Hedviga would complain about the god awful smell of the train or the horrible driving of the engineer. Several times after her trip she would call the headquarters to complain about engineer O'Malley. She would say" he was a drunk and drove to fast.".
After 32 years of this bs. O'Malley had it. The day of his retirement he brought that broom with him. He stood there waiting for Hedviga to round the front of the train and board it. As soon as he saw her he informed her he had retired. Hedviga ask "who will drive me to see my father" O'Malley after having a few retirement drinks said. " You don't need no stinking engineer " Hedviga looked at him stumped and said "but ,but who will take me" O'Malley grabbed the broom and tossed at her. shouting " put this between your legs and fly away you old witch"
I spend entirely too many hours a day tying my shoes

In that photo, I'm noting how little light there is between the boiler and the wheels and how close the tender is to the locomotive, which is something I have never seen in a model, no matter what the scale.

And reality rears up its nasty little pointed head through the fabric of space & time and pokes a hole in the universe of models everywhere....
