Let's see....3 story wood frame building heated probably by a coal furnace......and coal fireplaces throughout......

A lot like a lot of regular homes of the same vintage....which also burnt.

...but you so rarely see brick hotels of this period. The economics of the road house must have precluded substantive, durable construction methods and materials (not that brick structures didn't burn to the ground as well, but surely less frequently).

If one were to model that whole scene on a layout, just like that, somebody would say you did not know what you were talking about. Those initial, formative, early days of gas stations, when they were trying to figure the whole thing out, are always interesting, to me, at least.

Indeed! And, therein lies the value of these RPPC's! You can see how such things started and evolved from the truly unique scenes to today's cookie cutter formulaic boring edifices of fuel and commerce.....

Yes, indeed! That's one of the reasons why I enjoy these photos you post so much - they are informative; plus, I get to see places and times that would never have been available to me. That early gas station scene is a perfect example - I would not have been able to make that up. No part of it would have occurred to me, not even the lone pump, including how it is situated.
