Another little jewel emailed to me by a friend.

Here is a little known fact about golf balls...
According to Golf World magazine, the average golfer loses two golf balls per round for a worldwide
total of approximately 2,465,752 every day. Worried about running out? Don't be. Companies like
Titleist are working hard to ensure that never happens. Titleist makes 1.2 million golf balls each day.
And one more thought to ponder on..

Stand proud you noble swingers of clubs and losers of balls. A recent study found the average golfer
walks about 900 miles a year. Another study found golfers drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a
year. That means, on average, golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon. Kind of makes you proud.

Speaking of round toys, I wonder what ever happened to marbles (not mine, I lost those long ago). I haven't seen a kid with them in his hand for decades. Maybe that's a good thing because I am sure that more than just my own folks have gone sliding around on a bunch of them left on the floor by a numbskulled shooter who had scurried off to play with something else.

I am positive you are correct. As an example, of why I agree so readily with you, Rufus, is a mini-moment from that last June,. While I was tutoring my 4th Grade student, since we were about to work on "compound words," I showed him a metal shoehorn. He asked what it was (!!!) When I wrote down the word for it, he then asked what its purpose was and how it "worked." I showed him. He was amazed. He kept it to take home with him, to add to the entire cache of objects I have brought to our lessons to spark interest in the academic unit at-hand.


P.S. Somewhere among the saved rubble and artifacts of my life, I have a marble "shooter" (I think that's what they were called), and I am going to take it to school for him to see.

Seems to me that I heard/read/saw somewhere that there is money (suspect they mean valuables) lost/missing than there is in circulation. Wish I was better at finding it.

I recall taking my son to a flea-market once when he was a middle-schooler. He picked up a slide rule from a guy's table and asked me how you measure with it. It was a nice one...I showed him how it worked. Of course than I had to explain logarithms and it all sort of went to hell after that.

He's a nuclear engineer now...scares the hell out of me.

No wonder so much money is lost, we can't remember where we put it any better than we can remember where we heard we lost it... or is it read we lost it... or saw we lost it.

On the other hand, in 2009, an Israeli woman replaced her mother's mattress, not knowing that $1 million was stashed inside. She searched three landfills but did not find that old mattress. I barely remember the "how-to" of logarithms. I do remember my P-Chem Prof using them to solve the particle in a box problem at the blackboard with nothing but a piece of chalk in his hand while we had calculators - he beat us all quite soundly.....but he did have a few decades of practice while we had none

Very much similar to the bolded print above, I can't remember exactly where I saw that statement, but I think it might have been in an article/magazine related to treasure hunting. It was quite a while back (several years) that I read it, and I've always figured it was true because it didn't seem to have an "agenda" attached to it, meaning no one gained if I believed it or not. Add to that lost civilizations, sunken ships, people passing on and taking their knowledge with them, and a host of other things.
