I was thinking, reading this, that my 3-rail diseasemals are plastic...until I remembered the possibly Wentzco FT's on Lionel chassis...then the plethora of GM and AN NW's in 3-rail.
Ah, yes.
But I do have six F5's, three Geeps, one Lionel NW, and a dummy Kusan FA in black with SP&S decals for some dreary winter evening.
(mainly because A) it was free, and B) NP never, ever had any FA's..or FB's...or PA's...or PB's)
And the Erie Trainmaster with new shell to be lettered for NP as a test unit......

Looks sharp Sarge...introduces (to me) a real-life practice that I scarcely knew existed - the reconstruction of locomotives from a mixed bag of components. A fun project for sure...

A Weaver RS3 detailed and painted for the first locomotive I ever ran; a tutorial out of sight of the suits on the Auburn Branch. I also built a version of the same unit in NYC paint about a year ago, but this is just a "personal memory lane" project.

Always really nice models coming from your workbench Sarge. Does that ruler happen to be the exact size to fit in between wheels? I ask because I have a 24" piece of stock that happens to be a perfect fit in that regard, and I often used it to aid in straightening strips of flex track also.

Here's another "personal" loco.
These RSD15s were great big 2400hp things that were originally bought by PRR as freight helpers and transfer locos out of Altoona. They got distributed around after the socalled merger to the major yards in NY state (DeWitt and Selkirk each had two) and New England (Providence had 6812) along with the smaller RSD12s as heavy switchers and hump engines so the old NYC "hump trailers" could retire. DeWitt originally had 6813 and 6815, and Selkirk 6814 and 6816. 6811 was stored somewhere unserviceable. We also had an RSD7, which looks almost identical but with earlier mechanicals (the same "innards" as a PA3, 2250hp 244). I never knew it to run.
Late in the game some U23c arrived to become the next generation of heavy switchers and hump engines. Since Selkirk was the main GE shop, they got a few which bumped 6814 and a couple RSD12s to us, and 6816 went to Morristown along with 6812 to replace a bunch of broke Baldwins that had congregated there and were pretty well knackered.
More story than you need, but I spent many an evening on these things so had to build one. Starting with an Atlas one, bobbed the tank, moved the horn, built out some underframing, knocked all the steam generator stuff off the short-hood, paint and Micro decals.
Dimensionally these are good starting points, but visually the awful handrails let the side down. Like many of their offerings, they figured foldups like Lionel postwar were "preferred" so, unlike the beauty of their HO and N, we got stuck with these absolutely unneccessary and hideous excuses on what was purported to be a scale model. I won't get into the Lionel postwar style China-drive, but that at least is tameable with a couple resistors or DCC. A real shame Atlas never treated O seriously compared to the smaller scales.
Anyway, one day I will scare up enough Kemtron RS3 stanchions and do the railings on this thing, but otherwise what is available to work with to model what I remember. They (Atlas) were so close!

Since we drifted into ships, here is a photo of a 1/32 scale U-Boat, built by a friend many decades ago. The detail is accurate and outstanding. Still has it and added the crew figures just this week.

Looks good to me - even the handrails. Hood Diesels suffer serious abuse - I wonder if the Kemtron stanchions can even be attached to plastic with any success.
I have a videotape of that submarine. It belongs in the Smithsonian. I will never have the patience to do anything like that. Its builder modeled Thurmond, W. Va. in O Scale. I have permission to show you photos. Remind me, when I get the big computer going.

Yes, he is a master modeler, but doesn't give himself credit for his talent. This U-Boat blew me away when he sent me photos several years ago and I heard the build story. I have the photos somewhere but don't know where right now.

Ship guys are constantly amasing to me. That U-boot is absolutely magnificent! I have a book that came with "Hale" documenting the build. He was also an absolutely stellar builder. (Rex, it is a Fletcher, in 1/48 no less).
I just got off the horn with Pat Mucci. He's setting me up (bless 'm!) with good stanchions (P&D owns the Kemtron loco bits), so the RSD will hit the bench again one day this winter to get that upgrade. I might have to put pins in the feet of the stanchions for robustness, but shouldn't be a problem making them solid.
I just enjoy building them. Might build my Briggs NYC transfer caboose next...
