As you pointed out before, many of these old postcards seem to be shot that way.

True. But the scene here is in PA just short of NY out nearly to Erie, yet the appearance to me evokes a shore line station which is why I used the phrase "desert island-like".

Roulette, Pennsylvania

Judging by the area surrounding the station it doesn't appear that it was built to handle much in the way of traffic. Maybe just a whistle stop to drop off or pick up some freight or a passenger or two at times.

It is a small town. Apparently the railroad tracks are long gone as I see none on google maps. There is a road that goes into the area called railroad ave. Looks like it could be where the tracks used to be.

Looks to be a good model for a small rural model train layout.

My first reaction to that Roulette, PA station scene was that it was peaceful, instead of my often saying a place looked lonely. It seemed to me that the photo might have been taken early in the morning before everybody was up-and-about with their daily routines, despite what looks like two adults in white clothing doing something in the distance, off to the right, beyond the cornfield. The kids aren't even up yet to begin their marauding and/or chores..

To my imagination, if I'm permitted to say so, it's awful, a horrible dump, looking like a slaughterhouse or a frightening housing for hapless mental patients, a long time ago.

Being cold storage, it might be filled with cow and pig carcasses. Not to mention someone with a debt to the local mob.

There was a cold storage building down the road from my grandparent's home. Folks used it as a common freezer in town to store all their vegetables and other provisions dating back to a time prior to homes having freezers in them. Might have an ice box, but the freezer then was down the road. I recall her stating at times that she was going over to cold storage to get stuff for dinner. All gone now.........

That was an interesting little nugget. Have you ever considered writing a novel? With your powers-of-observation of people, society, places, and things, and your appreciation of history, you could pen a compelling story.

Considered? Yes. Will I? Probably never.

Looks like a house.
Check the spire on the building to the left.

It is and many businesses were(are) run out of such houses in this area with a shop around back. Pretty sure that both of these houses are still in Lemasters. Nice little village to visit.
