The roads were paved when motorized vehicles started to predominate.
Info was from my grand father and grand mother who were born in the late 1800s.
Interesting to learn that perspective from you, Roger, kind of firsthand info.
Now Murph, I may feel that old and look that old but I'm not.
My grands were married in the early 1900s. Both had some interesting things to tell.
In my younger days the Ohio River did freeze several times. My grandmother told about
driving cattle across the frozen river every winter to reach the B&O railroad on the West
Virginia side to send them to market. They would wait for the freeze because that was
cheaper than using a ferry when the river was not frozen.
This practice ended in the 1910s when locks and dams were put in the river because they
somehow kept the ice from freezing as deep and/or broken up.

This reads like a novel. As I was reading what you wrote, "To Kill A Mockingbird" came to mind. There is something authentic about what you have penned there. Interesting and real.
Tell us more. Much more.
My very best regards,
Murph

The locomotive looks like a large toy, doesn't it.

And, you can actually go see it at the B&O museum in Baltimore.

Seeing a model of that engine pulling a couple of period passenger cars going through the middle of the street in a small town on a layout would be more interesting that watching a 4 ft long big boy on a layout.

Reminds me of the TCA Western logo, drawn by Disney animator Ward Kimball:

Kimble and Walt Disney were both big on toy and real trains. A recent book about this is Walt Disney's Railroad Story, by Michael Broggie.

Yes. Had a relatively long career in active service and then on displays and fairs up through being donated to the Smithsonian.
On loan to the B&O museum.

I always had high hopes that SMR would have imported this engine. Passenger cars are available..........sort of.

There was an unmotorized 4-2-4 kitted in O scale in plastic, I think it was by Silver Streak. I had one for a while.
You begin flying with a full bag of luck and an empty bag for experience. The object is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.
