For some reason, the whole contraption seems almost immovable. (Pro'ly jus' my odd perception.)

Rufus,
Tell Murph that the "whole contraption" is in museums and what it is. Please.

The engine is the CVRR Pioneer that ran for ~75 years, narrowly escaped being burnt by the Confederacy in Chambersburg, was saved and maintained for historical displays all over prior to being donated to the Smithsonian, was on loan to museum in Allentown for a bit and currently at teh B&O roundhouse museum in Baltimore.

The car is one of the earliest combine cars - roughly same vintage. Not sure on it's full history but its currently at the PRR museum in Strasburg.

Isn't that a Payroll car?

Nope. That model of a payroll car is actually a V&T prototype car.

The person standing in the engine gangway is unusually accoutred, for a locomotive engineer. An early bookmobile, perhaps?

I think that it is a payroll car, first there are no vestibules/platforms. The rear entrance is between the rails with an "ENTRANCE" sign on the side of the car and there is an inset walkway down the side of the car to a set of steps with an "EXIT" sign.

From Westhaeffer's book on the CVRR............and the Entrance and Exit signs were in place because it was an exhibit that you could tour.

I don't know - I'm not entirely sure where that even is or was on the line - south / west of Hagerstown. The one bridge I could locate crossing the Potomac looks different to my eye.
