Winston Churchill

Postby HONDO74 » Sat Jun 06, 2020 2:51 pm

A statue of Britain's most renowned leader Winston Churchill has been vandalized in London as protesters turned out to speak against racism.

The vandalism came on the anniversary of D-Day when allied forces -- partially led by Churchill -- stormed the beaches of Normandy during World War II.

Footage online showed the bottom of the statue bearing neon green graffiti that read "ACAB," which stands for "all cops are b-------."

While it's unclear who the perpetrator was, many blamed the protesters and called out the police for not doing more to protect the statue. Police eventually surrounded the statue in an apparent attempt to protect it from further defacement in Parliament Square, where thousands of protesters had gathered, according to The Sun.

Some, however, seemed to excuse the vandalism by describing Churchill as a racist.

76 years ago our 17, 18 and 19 year old fathers and grandfathers were sacrificing their lives on the beaches of Normandy to save the world from fascism . Today many of our youth march as fascists to riot, loot, vandalize and injure their fellow citizens. Shame!

Churchill was kicked out as prime minister by his own people after the war. It wasn't until 15 years later that they came around to recognize/appreciate him for his efforts in World War 2. While he is one of the most recognized leaders, his valuation has come in as low as number four within Great Britain, particularly amongst scholars that evaluate everything he did or did not do.

Regarding "racism"

However, Churchill’s reputation has been tarnished by increasing scrutiny in recent years of his relationship with British India. The legendary Tory, who died in 1965, considered independence leader Mahatma Ghandi a threat to the British Empire, and has been accused of triggered a devastating famine in Bengal in 1943 through large-scale exports of food from India. Churchill has also been criticized for his tough attitudes on unions and workers rights, including a notorious incident in which soldiers were deployed in response to strikes in Tonypandy in South Wales during his tenure as home secretary.

Churchill's career was largely a mixed bag (IMHO). Following his great success during WWII, he paid dearly for his staunch imperialism. As he once said, "Using the word 'empire' is now considered naughty." He was a true conservative, angling to try to hang onto and preserve what was left of the British hegemon when the world had largely passed him, and the empire, by.

All true but the results of WW II may have been a lot different without Churchill.

Many? Our youth? More red necks than anti-fascists, who I assume you are calling fascists. The fascists were the ones carrying the Confederate flag or Swastikas in Charlottesville, not the Black Lives Matter crew. The anti-fa kids are not fascists, they are usually anarchists or left wing loonies. Different religion, same crazy ideology. Most of them probably don't know who Churchill was. Just like our President :). Idiot that he is.

Maybe they should eliminate his statue like they toppled a 125-year-old slave trader statue and sank it in a river ?

Black Lives Matter protesters in the UK tore down a statue of Edward Colston, a former slave trader.

Protesters in Bristol on Sunday used rope to topple the statue before rolling it into the River Avon.

The controversial statue was erected in 1895 and was the subject of a much debate regarding its removal.

Edward Colston

Colston used his wealth to support and endow schools, hospitals, almshouses and churches in Bristol, London and elsewhere. His name is commemorated by several Bristol landmarks, streets, schools and the Colston bun. Charitable foundations inspired by ones he founded still survive.

No good deed goes unpunished.

Next up for elimination. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Both slave owners..........

Re Washington:

Washington owned slaves, and, in order to preserve national unity, he supported measures passed by Congress to protect slavery. He later became troubled with the institution of slavery and freed his slaves in a 1799 will.

Re Jefferson:

During the revolutionary era, the states abolished the international slave trade, but South Carolina reopened it. In his annual message of December 1806, Jefferson denounced the "violations of human rights" attending the international slave trade, calling on the newly elected Congress to criminalize it immediately. In 1807, Congress passed the Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves, which Jefferson signed.[197][198] The act established severe punishment against the international slave trade, although it did not address the issue domestically.[199]

In Notes on the State of Virginia, he created controversy by calling slavery a moral evil for which the nation would ultimately have to account to God

Scholars remain divided on whether Jefferson truly condemned slavery and how he changed.[345][355] Francis D. Cogliano traces the development of competing emancipationist then revisionist and finally contextualist interpretations from the 1960s to the present. The emancipationist view, held by the various scholars at the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, Douglas L. Wilson, and others, maintains Jefferson was an opponent of slavery all his life, noting that he did what he could within the limited range of options available to him to undermine it, his many attempts at abolition legislation, the manner in which he provided for slaves, and his advocacy of their more humane treatment.[329][356][357][p] The revisionist view, advanced by Paul Finkelman and others, criticizes Jefferson for racism, for holding slaves, and for acting contrary to his words. Jefferson never freed most of his slaves, and he remained silent on the issue while he was president.[350][358] Contextualists such as Joseph J. Ellis emphasize a change in Jefferson's thinking from his emancipationist views before 1783, noting Jefferson's shift toward public passivity and procrastination on policy issues related to slavery. Jefferson seemed to yield to public opinion by 1794 as he laid the groundwork for his first presidential campaign against Adams in 1796.[359]

There you go. You now have the ground work to the re-write the history of the United States. Except when your done it won't be Called the UNITED STATES. You can eliminate the constitution and come up with a new one.

Since the US is the melting pot of the world with an ethnic diversity will you be able to write a new one that pleases everyone ?

Odd. They were far left wing liberal socialists and now they are fascists? They can't be both,

Last I checked, fascists were far right wing authoritarian types that embraced ultranationalism, loved dictatorial power, and forcibly suppressed opposition.........you know, the MAGA hat wearing orang kinds.....

Absolutely right Roger. He was the right man at the right time.

Sad that politics have to come into play and tarnish his reputation as a leader during dire times. So easy to look back and criticize leaders for societal changes and political correctness we have today. It was a different world back then.

But it's not the "the MAGA hat wearing orang kinds" that are out rioting, looting, vandalizing and injuring their fellow citizens. That is Antifa and BLM doing it. The ones that want to disband the police so they can do anything they want to.

Saw a lot of video. Didn't see any MAGA hats. They would get killed if they were out there.

This seems to be the way of today. Those that were heroes are now villains and vice versa.
I wont explain or defend any of this.

These were self inflicted wounds because he couldn't see the forest for the trees. He refused to listen or understand what his own people had gone through and when he insisted on following his own path (because he knew he was right) he lost the confidence of the electorate and they voted him out.

This wasn't issues 20/20 hindsight or Monday morning quarter backing. The empire was gone/done and he couldn't/wouldn't accept that. Most Americans are completely unaware of how much WW2 took out of Great Britain. It literally took almost two decades to work out the kinks and get back to something close to "normal". Even the children born after the war and raised in the mid 50's/early 60'a had little or no concept of the sacrifices that had been made to win the war. I'm not even arguing that they should. This was a very traumatic time and I can fully understand the desire of parents/grandparents to shield them from this.

A truly great leader understands this and adapts to changing times and changing situations. They learn from their mistakes and correct them. Churchill took far too long to realize this. One of the things I most admired about Ronald Reagan was his ability to acknowledge and accept when he made a mistake (which wasn't that often). He would go before the country and admit it (Iran Contra/AIDS). In Iran Contra it wasn't even he who made the mistakes but he still acknowledged them and he accepted responsibility because the buck stops here, on his desk, on his watch. He understood that the people would understand and accept that at face value. Everyone makes mistakes, it's called being human. If you screw up, admit it, seek forgiveness and learn from those mistakes. Don't lie, cover up, divert attention, distract, blame anyone and everyone around you.
