I read recently that Roadside America is closing. My impression is that this has been a long time coming. I recall visiting on a weekday more than a decade ago, wondering how the place was staying alive then. If we were there for an hour, I don't think we saw another visitor.

RA was, for me, a giant living piece of American folk art. It was a snapshot of one man's hand-built take on life in Central Pennsylvania, an era of small towns, big cities, and the country at its industrial peak. I guess all of our layouts are a bit like that. His family, its caretaker, likely had expanded it far beyond what he had ever envisioned. It, like the Choo-Choo Barn in Strasburg, was/is epic in its size and grandeur. It looked tired that day, however; half the trains weren't running, nor were quite a few of the animations. Kate Smith still belted out God Bless America, though, in a crackling, well-worn recording.

I came away that day with a fist full of postcards and a small magnet to remember I'd been there. The magnet's been stuck on the front of our refrigerator ever since:

I haven't read what will happen to it, but I suspect it will be carved up and bits auctioned along with all the other fixtures of the place. Twenty years from now, few will remember it. Time marches on.

Closed 2 years ago and everything was supposed to be up for sale or sold at auction. That seems to all be on hold now.

From the local articles I've read, there's been an on-again/off-again aspect to its demise, I suspect as folks try to preserve all or as much as possible.

A November 21 post on Facebook:
We feel it is the appropriate time to provide an update, and we appreciate your patience over the last 8 months. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the permanent closure of Roadside America after 85 years of business. Nearly 3 years ago, we decided to place the display for sale, hoping to find a buyer who would continue business operations. Despite meeting with multiple interested parties over the last 2 years, each with their own unique vision, none committed to moving forward with the village. When we closed our doors in March in the beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic, we remained hopeful that someone would come forward and commit to the business. As months passed and the future of tourism remained uncertain, we ultimately made the difficult decision to do what is best for our family and pursue other options.

We are planning an auction that will consist of all display pieces, including buildings, bridges, figures and animations. We will share auction details to our Facebook page over the next few weeks.

This decision was not made without extensive thought and consideration, and was ultimately the result of multiple factors and circumstances. We ask that you please be respectful and understanding of our choices during this difficult time, as this has been indescribably heartbreaking for our family.

There are no words to express how grateful we’ve been for every one of you, our valued customers and supporters. We truly feel blessed to have been part of your family traditions, memories and treasured moments. It has been our honor to care for Laurence’s meticulously handcrafted landscape, and to share our family’s history with so many people. It was a blessing to remain a family-owned business for so many years. We hope you’re all staying safe during this unprecedented time.

Probably a quixotic pursuit.

The best of luck doing that now. Might surprise them, but going beyond Facebook might be in their interest.

One of the things I remember most about Roadside America was at the end of the layout tour there was a yard area with a section depicting locomotives waiting to be scrapped...I swear half of them were Lionel Hudsons.

Picked up some more packing boxes at the post office. Theirs is a nice thin corrugated, so it works well. I need to make the elevation for the road that will run up the side, basically a curved up-hill bit. I'm thinking I can build it up using layers of corrugated. We'll see...pics to follow.

Roadside America wanted 2.3 million dollars for lock stock and barrel. For 3 years they had no takers. That price included 26 acres off of rt 78.Anyone interested in that chunk of ground. Would not give a rats arse about the toy trains.

$2.3 million seems a bit rich, even with the acreage. Good spot for an Amazon distribution center, although there's one not too far down the road off of Rte. 222.

An understatement, for sure.

A photo of Roadside America from nearly eight years ago...pretty much says it all:

Rather than a painted-on road like Lionel/Flyer festooned their tunnels with, I'm going to build a 3-D version. I provided for that by making the base quite a bit wider on one side. The question is how to best build it up, as it will have both curves and a pretty steep grade. It seems to me a multi-layer laminate made of some pretty stiff corrugated might work best (the method my predecessor used), rather than trying to cut something from wood or masonite and piece it together.

Kicking it around...more to follow.

1 to 1-1/2” cardboard strips in web form glued with hot melt makes a adequate frame for plaster cloth. Followed up with a coat of structolite will make a nice rigid base.

Thanks for that. That's largely the method we used on The Old Man's HO layout some fifty years ago, although we didn't use plaster-infused gauze. Instead we used plaster-soaked strips of paper towel. After that set up, we brushed on a couple coats of liquified plaster. It seemed to work fine, hard as a rock after it cured. Unfortunately that's about as far as it got...he kinda lost interest after awhile and I went off to school. That exercise taught me a lot about trackwork, however, and the related electrics required (almost none of which applies to 3-rail  ).

The three methods I'm familiar with is screen-wire, cut-cardboard woven together, and/or crumpled newspapers with a bit of masking tape holding it together, then removed afterwards. I've done the last two, never the screen-wire method. Instead of plaster, I'm leaning toward using papier-mâché (glue-soaked paper bits) over screen-wire or woven-cardboard. For some reason, the screen-wire approach sounds easier, but that might be misplaced.

Anyway, I'm a ways off from that...still need to get the underlying structure for this road in place.

BTW, Greg, you'll have to give us, or me at least, a lesson in rock carving. Yours looks brilliant. I botch it every time.
