Those Red Mobilgas Tank Cars!

Postby bob turner » Wed Jun 18, 2025 2:29 pm

Just eyeballing the OGR thread, recently resurrected by Erik. I think about eight years ago I went sort of freaky over the striking Mobilgas tanks. I shall use OGR as my host for some of these photos - and I think I have Erik's permission to copy his excellent photos.

Here is the Lobaugh tank that got me started - we think it was a Lobaugh display car, since it was decalled one side only. Not sure - it is now in the collection of Art Hayes:

Freight cars sure were a lot more colorful and eye catching back in the day. Of course, covered in graffiti color most likely doesn't make much difference. Gotta love the world we live in today.....not.

This is one of the cars I built to take the place of that tank that went to Art.

I should straighten that end out some day. This one is a 1950s Lobaugh - by then they had gotten away from brass tubes, and were using rivet-embossed wrappers.

This is called "getting carried away!"

I have always thought that if there was a cure for this sort of thing I would take it.

Left to right - MiLoco, Lobaugh post war, Lobaugh 1950s. Decals by Bob Anson (RIP).

I just wrapped this one up. PSC tank with some upgrades I had on the shelf for 10 years. Haven't taken the time to take pretty shots. Don't really care anymore. Haha

I think I have Erik's permission to repeat his photos - this one (and others) are hosted on OGR:

Great looking cars, not my era but if was say, modeling the Gulf Lines of the MP, I would build a fleet of them and weather the crud out of them including the oil-grime stain coming off the dome. Pretty much the norm look after a month of service.
