I did get to talk to Jahan this morning our time. We are both masters of finding and using cheap calling cards. She slept through the New Years celebration (reminds me of myself on our New Years). The weather is coolish, but I guess everyone went to a nearby park during the day anyway. If there is one silver lining to the whole thing, I talked to her mom and she was very happy that her daughter and granddaughter (Rosie went as well) were there for the New Year. Even in her language, I could detect a certain sense of resignation in her voice as if "I am so honored I could be with family on one of my last NowRuz." I am hoping she gets well enough that Jahan can take her to Shiraz to settle down. Whereas Tehran is, well, Tehran. Shiraz is almost pastoral by comparison, an area of olive trees, cotton, and former vineyards that got bypassed by the revolution. The original family home is there and if all goes well, Jahan's trip will finish up by the end of April having settled her mom there.
Yeah Tramp, I am here at Camp Reedley, for the most part, on my own. It might seem haunting to ramble around such a big place, but there is always something that needs doing. Once every couple of weeks our older daughter, Tiffany, comes down from San Francisco or I go up there; I love the City and noshing our way through ChinaTown, JapanTown, and Little Italy. The extended Persian community here in San Diego keeps interrupting my solitude with visits and gifts of more Persian food than I can possibly tolerate. I was hoping to complete a number of layout projects, but darn if every time I start something the doorbell rings and somebody has shown up with yet another "gift" of food. Of course you have to entertain them, have a glass or two of wine, and what they want is news of what is really going on from someone who is there.
This is not the the first time Jahan and I have been apart for a long time. In the beginning, it was me away on lengthy Air Force deployments, or, later, business trips. Through the 1980s, it was just too dangerous for her to return to her homeland at all. Things mellowed for a while, and she would go to visit every year, but now, it seems they have an idiot for a president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Some other countries have that problem. I am no big deal at Qualcomm, but I do direct groups here, in Boulder, Raleigh, and in Haifa, Israel. I hear a lot from the Haifa folks that I agree with, were it not that I have some dear ones in Tehran.

San, Thanks for the update. You should be happy you're wife is not of Irish descent. Because instead of all the relatives and friends bringing food gifts over, the Irish friends would show up and drink all your beer and leave when it was gone!!!!

San, what kind of Persian food is being delivered? I have no clue what Persian food might be, but I suppose I could look it up on the Net. I'm assuming it's similar to other Middle Eastern eats. Any caviar from the Caspian Sea?
