Its Durendal that gives it away! Good story, do you like the sagas? They're best read aloud. Nice one Jon, I have a couple of swords and used to like fighting when I was younger but its just a passing interest I'm not a trained swordsman, we used to get shitfaced drunk and joust on motorbikes, or get armored up and whale at each other with blunt objects for the amusement of the locals.

We had those in the UK too! I'm not talking about the big professional fairs, the locals - in fact most of our pub clientele - would rent a field once a year and get a similar bunch of loonies in to share the costs. We'd roast an ox or a pig, sometimes a sheep which is really excellent cooked on a spit.
You paid about ten bucks which got you a plastic mug for beer and a knife for cutting off chunks of dead animal with! Basically the idea is for local crafts people to sell their stuff and the local hooligans (me) to pretend to be medieval thugs, get drunk, eat a lot of half raw meat and put on a show for the kiddies and hopefully any impressionable young ladies who one felt ought to swoon at the very sight of your pigeon chested self in home made battle gear. They never do though.
It sounds chaotic but it was pretty well organized and really just a great big barbecue with entertainment. Farting contests, various demonstrations of how uncouth you could be given half a chance, the obligatory wet T-shirt contest for 'ladies', who has the ugliest bum for guys, that sort of healthy clean fun.
The jousting was done on Honda 50's seperated by a fence high enough to keep the riders heads down behind whilst the 'knights' stand up on the rear footpegs. Usually it was wet grass so it was lucky if the riders could keep the things upright for long enough for the knights to get in more than one or two strokes. We used Honda 50's so if they fell over no one got hurt as they're so light and the plastic legshields save the engine and keep you from getting burned and because they had fully enclosed chains which was much safer.
Though it all looked rather vulgar, dangerous and uncouth, it was really not all that bad. A great place for little kids to act up and run wild, we had nerf like swords and battleaxes for them too, the little guys could really get into it. It was a hell of a lot of fun. One of the things I miss about home is the village pub community spirit, we had some great times.
Once or twice I tried to find out if I could get something similar going over here but got blank looks and a long list of reasons why you cant do it, particularly the beer swilling without which it falls flat on its face anyway. Bloody ridiculous, you can have the most revolting pervert murderers on prime time but god forbid any young mind be deformed by exposure to tits'n'beer!
I've lived here for over 30 years and I love it but that puritanical bullshit still gets my goat.

I've often fantasized about riding my bike clad in a suit of armour! I made one once for my kid out of aluminum flashing, it looked pretty cool but for the Vulcan it'd have to be stainless or titanium with some properly thought out padding and moveable joints. Would that cause a few double takes or what? Oh sure there'd be the usual sheep chortling at my expense but who gives a crap what they 'think' if they ever do.
One of the great things about riding a combo (the English nick for a motorcycle with sidecar) is the amount of good vibes you get from everyone even the cops! The only bad vibes are from the tossers in Ferraris and other such high profile wankers who are pissed off about being upstaged by something that cost less than a valve adustment for their cages. Always cracks me up, that does. Nice cars I have nothing against them but it seems 9/10 arent bought by drivers but by prats who think they can buy anything. You can't .

Anyone like a beer? I have a case of Greene King Abbott Ale if anyone knows it, excellent and potent bitter, very hoppy. Or I have a six pack of Adnams Broadside which is another Suffolk brewery, thats a winter nip, a small bottle of thick syrupy barley wine equivalent to two doubles. give you a hell of a hangover but a good buzz beforehand. Abbott is a trippy beer too, you can get it over here in cans but its a shadow of its real non pressurized drawn from the wood self. Still darn good even so. America has come a long way since the disco era with micro breweries
