WM loco #22 was a Baldwin 2-6-0 Mogul, renumbered #205 in 1905. It was delivered to the WM in June 1882 and sold in April 1907 to the Sl&E...not sure who that is - need to do some further digging. The 1880's was a time of great expansion for the WM during John Mifflin Hood's presidency...a lot of equipment was acquired and older stuff rebuilt during these years.

Seeing that wonderful shot of the train pulling into Pen Mar, I am reminded of having always wondered if the point of the light atop the smokebox door were for lighting the way or simply warning those ahead that a locomotive was approaching. One might conjecture that if lighting the way were the goal, locating such a "head-lamp" down closer to or on the cow-catcher would have been more effective. Any thoughts on this, folks? Any facts?

Depended on the RR - location varied and as better lighting was possible smaller, more efficient and brighter lights could be mounted lower - some larger articulated engines that had a sizeable front porch had the light mounted there.

The station at Blue Ridge Summit is still there...I believe it's a county library now. The platforms are gone.

Thought it was, but was not quite sure. Seems that old RR stations make good libraries.......... Wonder if plan for it exist and if a decent model might be possible?

A hundred years ago + or - almost every town had a place for a train to stop. Most must have had actual stations.
I wonder how many there were? Which leads to how many there are today where trains actually stop for business?

I am sure you are correct about that, thinking back to when I was a boy (not a hundred years ago but deep enough into train history to be representative) and remembering nearly every city along the Monongahela, Youghiogheny, and Ohio Rivers had a train station, many like the one directly above your posting, here, Roger.

And now that I think of it further, I'll bet every one of us modelers who decides to have a layout, almost no matter the size, has a RR station on it, as one of the first buildings to go into place (If I am proven wrong, eh, so what.)
